Abilene Wyle sweeps past Lubbock-Cooper, into region tournament

In a District 4-5A match on Sept. 23 in Woodrow, Wylie narrowly defeated Lubbock-Cooper 12-7.

However, in their most recent encounter, Wylie made it clear that they were the superior team.

At the Region I-5A quarterfinal team tennis match held at Hardin-Simmons’ Streich Tennis Center, the Bulldogs swept Lubbock-Cooper with a dominant 10-0 victory.

According to first-year coach Adam Cherry, the Wylie team was extremely confident on that day. He attributed their previous loss to factors such as homecoming festivities and a long trip to Lubbock. Cherry expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “I told them I’d like to see a statement… We came out, got on top of them in doubles and just didn’t look back.”

Cherry admitted that he didn’t expect his team to sweep the Pirates, crediting their success to the close double matches they won.

Lubbock-Cooper finished third in the district standings behind Wylie and the district champion, Wylie.

Wylie's Tate Heuerman returns a shot in the boys doubles match against Lubbock-Cooper's Brendan Lane and Braden Lane. Heureman and Talon Baker won the match 4-6, 6-4, 11-9, and Wylie beat the Pirates 10-0 in the Region I-5A quarterfinal team tennis match Tuesday at Hardin-Simmons' Streich Tennis Center.

Region tournament up next

Wylie (22-3) will face Aledo in the region semifinal match at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Hamilton Park Tennis Club in Wichita Falls.

In the other semifinal match, Argyle will compete against defending state champion Amarillo High.

The winners of these matches will meet on Friday at 10 a.m. at Hamilton Park Tennis Club for a state berth.

Amarillo High defeated Lubbock High 10-8 on Tuesday, while Argyle emerged victorious with an 11-4 win against Midlothian.

Aledo won against Colleyville Heritage with a score of 11-8 on Monday.

Since Wylie didn’t play against Aledo this season, Coach Cherry mentioned that they will need to do some research on their opponent.

Regarding their potential future matchups, Cherry stated, “We know either team that comes out of that (other semifinal) is going to be a very tough match.”

The state tournament will take place on October 25-26 in Waco.

Ever since reaching the Class 5A finals in 2021, Wylie has been striving to secure a state team tennis berth. In 2017, they won the Class 4A state title.

Coach Cherry believes in the capabilities of his team, stating, “I definitely think we can (win it all). Lubbock High, us, Amarillo, and Argyle are all capable of beating each other on any given day. So, we’ll have to come ready to play, and I think today was a statement match. I hope this momentum just carries over to the region tournament.”
