Golf Pros Address PGA Tour Concerns Surrounding LIV Golf Rumors
Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Charley Hoffman, Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson, Peter Malnati and Adam Scott have teamed up to put to rest any lingering worries within the PGA Tour. The seven golfers, all current or future player directors on the PGA Tour Policy Board, have distributed a two-page memo to the Tour’s membership addressing the “speculation in our game,” including the upcoming Dec. 31 deadline for the PGA Tour-LIV Golf deal and the role of the player directors in future decisions, as reported by Golf Digest.
The memo revolves around the players’ efforts to ensure that no major decisions can be made in the future without the prior involvement and approval of the Player Directors. The group is focused on the negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund that finances LIV Golf, while also emphasizing the utmost importance of getting the governance review correct.
Notably, the memo mentions the establishment of a governance committee of players to guarantee that no major decision can be made in the future without the prior involvement and approval of the player directors. It also highlights their efforts to meet the end-of-year deadline and their meetings with potential investor groups to potentially become strategic partners. The group also hailed Tiger Woods’ arrival to the Policy Board on August 1 and the progress made since then.
The memo was sent out amid rumors of Jon Rahm signing with LIV Golf, which some have deemed a “done deal,” and comes after comments from Rahm stating that there was “absolutely no chance” he’d replace Rory McIlroy on the policy board. Interestingly, Woods was added to the Policy Board following a request from 41 golfers to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, with Scott set to replace Hoffman in 2024.
