FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — In a shocking twist, the New York Jets have decided to release Adrian Amos, a seasoned backup safety, confirmed a source to ESPN on Saturday.
Amos, 30, who has had an eight-year stellar career as a starter with the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, was mostly in a backup role for the Jets. Despite this, he managed to play 248 defensive snaps. However, in recent weeks, his playing time had decreased, leading to what one source called a mutual separation.
The decision to waive Amos was partly made to give more playing time to younger backups Ashtyn Davis and rookie Jarrick Bernard-Converse. There may have been other factors at play as well. The transaction was initially reported by NFL Network.
Amos had signed a one-year, fully guaranteed $1.75 million contract in June, shortly after projected starter Chuck Clark suffered a season-ending knee injury. Second-year safety Tony Adams impressed during training camp and won the starting job opposite Jordan Whitehead, surpassing Amos.
In 11 games, including three starts, Amos recorded 23 tackles and one pass defended. He also made significant contributions on special teams (193 snaps).
