Marlins Add Kyle Tyler on Minor League Contract

The Miami Marlins have made a move in the minor league by signing right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler. The deal was reported by Robert Murray of FanSided, and it includes an invitation for Tyler to join the major league Spring Training.

At 27 years old, Tyler spent the 2023 season with the Seattle Mariners under a minor league deal, making 27 appearances in Double-A, with 26 starts and 135 innings pitched, resulting in a 5.60 earned run average. Despite struggling with a .351 batting average on balls in play and a 63.6% strand rate, his 4.47 FIP showed promise with a 22.3% strikeout rate and a 9.4% walk rate.

Prior to his time with the Mariners, Tyler had limited exposure in the major leagues, making seven appearances, five with the Angels in 2021 and two with the Padres in the following year, showcasing a 2.20 ERA in just 16 1/3 innings. His minor league performance over the same period included 111 1/3 innings with a 4.12 ERA, a 26.3% strikeout rate, and a 9.9% walk rate.

With the acquisition of Tyler, the Marlins are bolstering their non-roster pitching depth. This move comes at a time when the team’s pitching depth has been depleted due to trades and injuries, making Tyler a valuable addition with his versatility and potential to secure a spot on the 40-man roster.
