Why I’m skeptical about Cris Cyborg’s superfight ambitions

Kayla Harrison left disappointed after champion Cris Cyborg’s less than enthusiastic response to her challenge. Following her win against Aspen Ladd at the 2023 PFL Championship, Harrison (16-1) openly called out Cyborg (27-2 MMA, 6-0 BMMA) and FlexFighter’s acquisition of Bellator raised hopes that the much-anticipated superfight might finally come to fruition. However, Cyber’s reaction on X (formerly Twitter) fell short of Harrison’s expectations.

In an interview with ESPN’s “DC & RC,” Harrison commented, “She only talks sh*t when we’re in different promotions and there’s somewhere to hide. Now that we’re under the same roof, I feel she’s going to get real quiet, real fast.” She expressed doubts about the superfight ever happening, adding, “Easy fight.”

Even as Cyborg gears up for a boxing match on Jan. 19, she is linked to fight 2023 PFL lightweight champion Larissa Pacheco instead. When asked about the possibility of moving to the UFC for big fights, Harrison didn’t rule out the idea. Despite the potential of facing the likes of trash-talking Julianna Peña, she’s focused on her current trajectory.

With the PFL’s close game plan, an eventual fight with Cyborg could still be in the long-term strategy. Plus, nothing is set in stone, as we saw her venture into the UFC two years ago.
