Authorities in Newport Beach, California, are investigating potential criminal involvement of Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey with an underage girl, as disclosed by Sgt. Steve Oberon on Wednesday morning.
Allegations emerged on social media earlier this week, claiming that Giddey maintained an inappropriate relationship with an underage high school junior. The social media account linked to the claims has since been deactivated.
“We have information and we’re looking into it,” said Oberon. “We’re investigating whether or not a crime occurred.”
An NBA spokesperson disclosed that the league office is also conducting an investigation into the allegations.
Giddey, 21, has chosen not to comment on the allegations. Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault has referred to the allegations as a “personal matter” and has refrained from further comment, stating that the organization made the decision for Giddey to continue playing based on the facts they have.
Giddey has sustained his position in the starting lineup for the Oklahoma City Thunder’s recent losses, continuing to contribute to the team’s performance this season.
