Lamborghini, the Italian manufacturer, is gearing up for its biggest sportscar racing programme in history, introducing the Ligier-chassised SC63 machine, a prototype it has never fielded before. However, the project faced a major setback just a few weeks into the start of testing when Bortolotti crashed the car heavily at Paul Ricard, causing severe damage to the tub.
Following the accident, Lamborghini successfully achieved significant mileage on a new chassis. The vehicle underwent two full tests at Almeria and Jerez in Spain, and it’s now being transported to the US for the IMSA-sanctioned test at Daytona next month.
Grosjean, who was among the drivers testing the SC63 LMDh, was impressed with its performance, especially with the car’s hybrid system, which he described as a good surprise. He expressed his hope for successful tests in the future.
Looking ahead, Lamborghini is working on further developing the SC63 LMDh in preparation for its competition debut in Qatar next March. Bortolotti emphasized his contentment with the progress of the programme and the reliable performance of the car, signaling the potential to learn and develop it further.

Like Alpine, Lamborghini decided to join the LMDh ranks a year later than its rivals, finalizing the programme in the summer of 2022. The SC63 was unveiled to the public in July, followed by its first full test at Paul Ricard, given the constraints of time.
Lamborghini is now moving forward with its development in the US, with high hopes for an intense testing phase till the end of the year in preparation for the upcoming season. Plans also include the fielding of a single car in the full WEC season and in the endurance events in IMSA, with an additional SC63 expected at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.
The factory drivers signed up for the programme include Grosjean, Bortolotti, Daniil Kvyat, and Andrea Caldarelli. Other prominent names such as Matteo Cairoli and Edoardo Mortara are under consideration to join the team in IMSA.
