During Thursday’s match against Villanova, the North Carolina Tar Heels observed their starting wing Cormac Ryan injure his ankle after missing a free throw. Ryan required assistance leaving the court, and while he was able to walk to the locker room, his injury became a major focus for the team heading into the following day.
The guard didn’t participate in UNC’s victory over Arkansas, sitting out the game as the Tar Heels managed to avoid a losing streak. However, there are lingering questions about Ryan’s status going forward.
After the game, Hubert Davis was questioned about Ryan’s status and mentioned that there’s no definite timetable for his return as of now.
“I don’t know. He tried to play today and he just didn’t feel like he could cut,” Davis stated via Inside Carolina. “Cormac plays at level 10 all the time and he was very emotional and upset before the game because, in his mind, his decision was already made (that) ‘I’m gonna the play.’ For him not to be able to do that was very upsetting to him. But his leadership on the bench, he was real. He was another coach. He was very vocal about what we needed to do out there and he was a part of the team as if he was out there on the floor.”
Ryan provided a significant boost for the Tar Heels in the Bahamas, starting with their win over Northern Iowa. He found his rhythm from the three-point line, helping the Tar Heels rally to avoid an upset loss.
He also performed well against the Wildcats despite the loss. Now, with a game against Tennessee scheduled for Wednesday, the Tar Heels are hopeful that they can welcome a key player back to their lineup.
