D-Backs Trade for 3B Eugenio Suárez from Mariners, Swap Two Players

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks made a significant move on Wednesday, acquiring slugger Eugenio Suárez from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala.

32-year-old Suárez, a former All-Star for the Cincinnati Reds, has been an impressive power hitter over the past decade, hitting 246 home runs since 2012. His addition addresses the D-backs’ need for a third baseman, following a season where the position was mainly manned by Evan Longoria and Emmanuel Rivera.

Suárez’s arrival also bolsters the reigning NL champions’ lineup with his power hitting ability, having racked up 22 homers and 96 RBIs for the Mariners last season while playing third base and designated hitter. Financially, Suárez is due $11 million for the next year with a $15 million option for 2025 and a $2 million buyout.

Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen commented on the acquisition, stating, “It adds a little bit of stability at that spot. He’s a guy we’ve liked for a long time.”

Vargas, a 24-year-old right-hander, made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks this season, while 30-year-old Zavala has spent the past three seasons as a backup catcher for the Chicago White Sox and the Diamondbacks.

Seattle Mariners president of baseball operations, Jerry Dipoto, stated, “Adding Seby and Carlos is another step toward building the type of deep roster that is required at the major league level. Seby is an experienced catcher with excellent defensive skills who will team with Cal behind the plate. And Carlos is a young reliever with the type of ‘big stuff’ that our staff has done a wonderful job developing over the years.”

However, moving on from Suárez could be a tough sell to a fan base with skepticism about the club’s direction, particularly after missing the playoffs. Dipoto’s missteps with his postseason comments and the perceived move to clear salary without securing a replacement leader may leave a hole at third base in the eyes of fans.

Dipoto had emphasized the desire to reduce strikeouts, particularly from the right side, which was a factor in not extending a qualifying offer to Teoscar Hernández. While Suárez brought power, he also led the American League in strikeouts with 214.
