In 2023, the MLB season, despite its struggles, brought about a golden age for player development within the Giants franchise
Rookies, including top prospects, made their debut last season, making the youth movement the most notable feature of an otherwise lackluster campaign.
One standout rookie was top prospect Marco Luciano, who joined the Giants after quite a journey since his 2016 signing for a hefty $2.6 million.
Luciano began the 2023 season in Double-A, rising to Triple-A in mid-July, and eventually making his big league debut with the Giants on July 26. His performance in 14 games with the team showcased potential, despite some growing pains.
Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi acknowledged Luciano’s potential, expressing excitement about his future prospects with the team.
However, the Giants had been in a similar situation before, putting their hopes in rookie infielder David Villar, which did not go as planned. J.D. Davis had to step in to stabilize the situation.
The Giants recognize they need contingency plans as they prepare for the 2024 season, putting their focus on adding depth behind Luciano, considering options like Tommy Edman from the St. Louis Cardinals.
Tim Anderson and Willy Adames could also be potential trade targets for the Giants to consider. Alternatively, they could explore free-agent options such as Amed Rosario and Enrique Hernández.
While the Giants need to address their continued focus on adding star power to the lineup and starting rotation, they must also concentrate on securing veteran depth behind Luciano.
