Welcome to a new listening season. As MLB executives evaluate the free-agent market and work to prepare for the winter meetings in early December, numerous players are being discussed as potential trade candidates. But what exactly makes a player a trade candidate? Mostly it is due to contractual circumstances. Many of the players being considered are significant contributors, but they are also in line for substantial paydays through their current deals or impending free agency. Others may be out of sync with their team’s timeline or spending. Not every name being bandied about as trade bait, however, will actually move. Many teams will choose to keep their stars.
