As the offseason began, there was uncertainty looming over whether the Phillies would be able to secure a long-term contract with Aaron Nola. Yet, on November 19, five days before Thanksgiving and two weeks before MLB’s Winter Meetings, common ground was found on a seven-year, $172 million contract.

“I wasn’t confident,” the Phillies’ president of baseball operations shared at a press conference to announce Nola’s new deal. “Even though I knew that Aaron loved it here, anytime someone enters free agency, you never know what might happen.”

Teams were vying for Nola’s talent, with the Braves and Dodgers reportedly offering contracts similar to the Phillies’. The Cardinals and Red Sox had also expressed interest, with the Braves also targeting starting pitching.

The Louisiana native remained loyal to the Phillies, emphasizing, “It’s not really about the money for me, it’s being in a place we want to be for the next seven years. That part is more important to me, the relationships and memories I’ve made over here and that we’ve made as a team. That trumps (money).” Emphasizing on the importance of relationships, Nola expressed his commitment to the team.

However, the Phillies are making a substantial investment with Nola, considering the risk involved in paying such a large sum to a pitcher. General manager Sam Fuld acknowledges this risk but underlines Nola’s exceptional qualities in pitching, stating “you have to start with the makeup, and I don’t know if anyone in the game has better makeup than Aaron Nola.”

Nola’s contract runs through 2030, solidifying a commitment to the team’s future. With the team’s rotation and everyday positions secured, the Phillies are now focused on further strengthening their club for the upcoming season.

“We don’t really have a glaring need but we will continue to look to see how we can get better,” Dombrowski said, outlining the Phillies’ strategy for the offseason.
