NASCAR sponsors program at B-CU to engage diverse students
In a move to foster increased diversity and inclusion in the world of auto racing, NASCAR has launched a groundbreaking lab at Bethune-Cookman University. This pioneering initiative is aimed at cultivating student interest and support for auto racing and includes activating and marketing racing events to a more diverse audience, including potential NASCAR employees.
The lab, established this year, has set out to incorporate the creative talents of students in devising an innovative and engaging on-campus event to uplift the Daytona International Speedway experience. Armed with a substantial budget of $65,000 USD, regular meetings with NASCAR representatives, and encouragement from NASCAR officials, students were entrusted with the responsibility of organizing a memorable event to raise awareness and appreciation for auto sports.
Participants in the project have spoken of the challenges they faced in conceptualizing and executing their plans, citing the difficulties of transforming their ambitious ideas into reality. However, their efforts culminated in the successful implementation of a captivating motor racing event on October 27.
The activation boasted an immersive experience, including the presence of a race car adorned with the B-CU school logo and representative colors. The simulation allowed students to gain insight into the physical constraints experienced by racing drivers, and activities such as tailgating games, a shaded lounge, and a misting station aimed at attracting more college students to NASCAR events.
According to Caryn Grant, senior director of NASCAR’s diversity and inclusion initiative, college students participating in this program are being provided with invaluable experience that will equip them for their future careers. This includes marketing and budget management, offering a bridge to the motorsports industry that will support the growth of future professionals.
The engagement of students in orchestrating the on-campus activation has not only brought forth newfound respect and admiration for the sport but has also fostered important connections, providing a wealth of knowledge and real-world business experience. Viewing the business side of NASCAR has provided students with crucial insights and significant networking opportunities, enriching their future prospects and creating lasting memories.
At its core, the NASCAR campus lab is poised to leave a meaningful and lasting impact, opening up a world of opportunities for underrepresented individuals and aligning NASCAR with its commitment to diversity and inclusion in the motorsports industry.
