Braves Interested In Sonny Gray

The Atlanta Braves are reportedly showing interest in acquiring the services of right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network (X link). Morosi describes Atlanta as “one of the top suitors” for Gray. The Twins, Cardinals, and Phillies have also been linked to Gray this offseason, but after the Phillies re-signed Aaron Nola, their interest in Gray may have waned.

Interestingly, Morosi and ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that the Braves made a push to sign Nola as well, indicating that Atlanta is looking to make a major upgrade to their rotation. It has been widely reported that the Braves are in pursuit of another top-notch starter, with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggesting that a front-line starter is a priority on their wishlist.

The Braves have been strategic in creating payroll flexibility, making a series of player moves that has given them the financial room to pursue a top free agent pitcher. According to MLB Trade Rumors, Gray is projected to land a four-year, $90MM deal. The three-time All-Star is coming off a stellar 2023 season with a 2.79 ERA over 184 innings for the Twins, finishing as the AL Cy Young Award runner-up.

If the Braves sign Gray, it is likely that they view him as a long-term piece in their rotation, especially with veterans like Charlie Morton and possibly Max Fried nearing the end of their time with the team. The addition of Gray would provide stability and depth to the pitching staff, which has been a focus for the Braves as they aim for continued success.
