As the NFL season reaches its midpoint, fans are still assessing the field. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward has a powerful message for those who have labeled the Steelers as “fraudulent.”
The prevailing criticism revolves around head coach Mike Tomlin’s ability to lead the team to a 6-3 record, with claims that it’s a fluke unlikely to hold up in the playoffs. This viewpoint is seemingly backed by the Steelers’ offense, which ranks 28th in the league with a minus-26 point differential across the first nine games of the season.
Speaking out on the “Not Just Football” podcast, Heyward hit back:
“Who are they judging?” Heyward said. “They’re not in this. Smoke and mirrors? Screw you. We worked too hard for this. These guys dedicate their lives. We try to be a good defense. Smoke and mirrors, I think that’s a cloud of smoke.”
His vigorous defense was initially sparked by comments from Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who compared his team to the Steelers. James noted that the team has managed to maintain a winning record despite not outgaining or outscoring any of their opponents so far in the season.
Attempting to reference statistics from the Elias Sports Bureau, Heyward responded to James, saying, “I love LeBron but man, stay away from football, my guy. 6-3 is 6-3.”
His strong sentiments were echoed by star linebacker T.J. Watt, who emphasized that in the long run, it’s all about wins and losses, not the scores. “Each and every week, we are just trying to get the job done,” Watt said.
The upcoming games look promising for the Steelers, with matchups against two teams playing with backup quarterbacks due to injuries.
First, they’ll face the Cleveland Browns, who lost Deshaun Watson to a season-ending shoulder injury, with rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson stepping in. Then, the Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 12, following Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow’s injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign after a torn ligament in his wrist.
