Luke Prokop on NHL’s Pride missteps and preparing to make hockey history

On July 21, 2021, Luke Prokop made history as the first openly gay hockey player under an NHL contract. When the Nashville Predators’ defenseman needed to gather his thoughts after shaking the hockey world, a text from NHL superstar Auston Matthews gave him a much-needed confidence boost. Although he’s now 21 and has yet to skate in the NHL, Prokop’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. He recently expressed in an interview with The Athletic that coming out has set him free – mentally and physically.

After being signed to the Predators’ AHL affiliate in Milwaukee, Prokop could now be the first openly gay athlete to play in an AHL game. More than the nerves, the support he’s received from the hockey community has made an immense impact. Elton John and numerous NHL players offered their congratulations and support. As he navigates his path towards the NHL, from playing for junior teams to joining ECHL squads, Prokop experienced an overwhelming level of understanding and inclusivity.

Coming out wasn’t without challenges. Prokop expressed that he hoped more players would come out after him, but he remains supportive of others who have yet to take that step. His most significant takeaway has been the support he received, a sentiment that goes beyond friendships and right into the locker room. He confessed that he was initially uncomfortable with the language he heard in those spaces, admitting he used that language as well. However, after coming out, his perspective on the power of words changed, particularly given that teammates reached out to apologize for their language in the past.

“The lesson is you don’t know what everyone is going through,” Prokop acknowledged. “The words you say do matter. Make sure you think before you speak.”

Even with his newfound confidence, he remains realistic about the future. Prokop is grateful for the overwhelming support he’s received while acknowledging some negativity that’s also come his way. He remains positive and doesn’t regret coming out. It’s clear that by being himself, Prokop is contributing to changing hockey’s culture. He’s seen the change in language be put into practice across every team he’s played on.

Prokop’s courage in pushing past the boundaries of stereotypes is making an impact on not just his generation but the entirety of the hockey world. He points out the positive strides that have already been made, especially his teammates who fully embraced and accepted him. His journey is a testament to the strides the sport has taken towards inclusivity.

Luke Prokop’s story is about more than just sports. He stands as a beacon of hope for everyone to be their true, authentic selves – on and off the ice.
