Helmut Marko admits ‘giving up’ in search for another Verstappen

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has made controversial comments about finding a competitor at Max Verstappen’s level, suggesting he has ceased his search for a worthy challenger to the Dutch racing superstar.

Verstappen has secured his third consecutive title in 2023, setting new records and dominating his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez.

Under mounting pressure, Perez faces competition from other drivers vying for a spot at Formula 1’s leading team, with Daniel Ricciardo standing out with strong performances at AlphaTauri.

Ricciardo, the only team-mate to have outperformed Verstappen, accomplished this feat twice between 2016-2018. His experience could be a key factor in potentially replacing Perez when his contract expires in 2024.

Alex Albon failed to make an impression on his Red Bull team when driving for them in 2019 and 2020

Perez is not the only driver who has struggled against Verstappen’s exceptional performances. Both Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly underperformed and were replaced by Red Bull after less than 30 races.

Red Bull ‘happy with a future GP winner’

Marko, known for his critical views on Verstappen’s former team-mates, has stated that there is no “next Verstappen” and is now focused on nurturing other young drivers, such as Oliver Goethe, a recent addition to the team’s young driver program.

“Good name, good guy,” Marko told oe24 about Goethe.

“A German living in London and Monte Carlo. He was quick in the tests and next year he has to prove himself in Formula 3.

“He has a certain boldness. But I’ve already given up looking for a new Verstappen, he doesn’t exist. I’ll be happy if we find a future GP winner.”
