Today in Sports – Syracuse fullback Jim Brown scores an NCAA Football record 43 points

On November 17, 1956, Syracuse triumphed over Colgate with a 61-7 victory, thanks to the top-notch performance by halfback Jim Brown. During the game, Brown astoundingly scored six touchdowns and kicked seven extra points, setting a record for the most points scored by an individual player in a single game in NCAA history.

For sports enthusiasts, November 17 has had its fair share of remarkable events throughout history. In 1959, Connie Dierking of Syracuse became the first player to foul out of a game in the first quarter, as the Nationals edged out Cincinnati 121-116 in New York. Another memorable moment occurred in 1968, when the “Heidi” television special started right on time, cutting off the NBC broadcast of the Oakland-New York Jets game in the last minutes, leaving viewers unaware of the Raiders’ incredible comeback victory of 43-32.

In 1975, Ken Anderson of the Cincinnati Bengals put on an outstanding performance by passing for 447 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-24 win over the Buffalo Bills. In 1981, Bill Cartwright of the New York Knicks tied a 20-year-old NBA record by hitting 19 of 19 free throws in a 124-110 loss to the Kansas City Kings. Purvis Short of the Golden State Warriors also left a mark in history in 1984 by scoring an impressive 59 points in a 131-114 loss to the New Jersey Nets.

Fast forward to the 90s, and we witness David Klingler of Houston throwing an NCAA-record 11 touchdown passes in a game where the Cougars trounced Eastern Washington 84-21 in 1990. Sadly, in 1991, Detroit offensive lineman Mike Utley suffered a tragic spinal injury, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Another significant moment occurred in 2000 when Jason Kidd made history with a dubious quadruple-double, earning 18 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and 14 turnovers in the Phoenix Suns’ 90-85 loss to the New York Knicks.

On the professional boxing front, in 2001, Lennox Lewis restored his WBC and IBF heavyweight titles by knocking out Hasim Rahman in the fourth round, marking Rahman’s short-lived 209-day reign as the heavyweight champion.

Switching gears to basketball, New Orleans tied an NBA low in 2004 by taking just two foul shots in a 95-84 loss to Phoenix. Fast forward to 2007, and we see Martin Brodeur becoming the second goalie in NHL history to win 500 career games by leading New Jersey to a 6-2 win at Philadelphia.

In 2013, Jimmie Johnson secured his sixth Sprint Cup championship in eight years, and Sebastian Vettel set an F1 season record with his eighth straight victory at the U.S. Grand Prix. The exciting run continued in 2014, with Amber Orrange making a game-changing jumper in overtime, lifting No. 6 Stanford to an 88-86 victory against top-ranked Connecticut, thus ending the Huskies’ 47-game winning streak.

Finally, in 2014, Miami Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton signed a monumental $325 million, 13-year contract with the team, surpassing the previous record set by Miguel Cabrera with a $292 million, 10-year deal with the Detroit Tigers earlier that year.
