2023 NCAA football assistant coach salaries methodology

Exploring the Methodology of Football Bowl Subdivision Football Assistant Coach Pay

To ascertain the total pay packages of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football assistant coaches for their current contract years, USA TODAY Sports initiated a request for contracts and related documents from all schools subject to open-records disclosure or any form of disclosure about employees’ pay. Around 20 FBS schools or athletics departments fall under private jurisdiction or state law exemptions, which exempt them from fully disclosing compensation data of their coaches.

In the chart, a dash (–) denotes schools that are private or have chosen not to release the information.

These listings are based on schools’ assistant coaching rosters as of August 1, 2023.

Understanding the Compensation Categories

Total Pay: This encompasses the base salary on an annualized basis, among other aspects. It also includes deferred payments, annual expense accounts, housing allowances, and various bonuses. However, it excludes amounts paid in connection with a coach’s buyout from a previous employer, standard university benefits, and athletically related compensation received from non-university sources. The NCAA mandates disclosure of athletically related income from non-university sources if it exceeds $600 per year.

Maximum Bonus: This denotes the maximum amount that can be received if the team meets on-field performance goals, academic or player-conduct goals.

Assistant Coaches Pay Total: This figure represents the sum of the total pay for the assistant coaches at the respective school, excluding the strength coach.

Head Coach Total Pay: This refers to the total pay for the head coach at the assistant coach’s school for 2023.

Strength Coach Pay: This indicates the total pay for the head football strength coach at the assistant coach’s school for 2023.
