Members of 2018 world junior team violated Hockey Canada’s code of conduct: Sources

An email sent to governors across the CHL revealed that during a fund-raising event in London in June 2018, members of Hockey Canada’s 2018 world junior team violated the governing body’s code of conduct, as per an independent adjudicative panel. Hockey Canada later announced that an appeal had been filed by an undisclosed party shortly after the panel released its findings.

In response to the appeal, Hockey Canada decided not to disclose the details of the investigative report or the panel’s findings to protect the integrity of the appeal process. The organization stated that the appeals process is expected to commence in the near future.

The panel did not specify which section of Hockey Canada’s code of conduct was violated. The code covers various behaviors, including proper attire, appropriate interactions with opponents and officials, strict prohibition of underage drinking, and guidelines to prevent sexual harassment.

Hockey Canada has been facing intense scrutiny since May 2022 when allegations of sexual assault against members of the 2018 world junior team came to public attention. The allegations, filed in a lawsuit settled by Hockey Canada, involved an incident in a London hotel room. Subsequently, law enforcement agencies and the NHL launched their own investigations into the matter.

Following the pressure facing Hockey Canada, its CEO and board of directors stepped down, leading to the election of a new board of directors. Additionally, the organization hired a law firm to investigate the sexual assault allegations and present a report to an independent adjudicative panel.

The panel conducted a hearing and reached a decision on whether the 2018 world junior team players violated Hockey Canada’s code of conduct. The ongoing saga has led to significant developments within Hockey Canada and raised serious questions about its handling of the situation.
