Goodbye, Auto Club Speedway. The iconic NASCAR track in Fontana, California has been demolished, making way for a new, smaller facility. The demolition can even be seen from space, thanks to a satellite image obtained by The Drive.
The old two-mile oval track is being replaced by a high-banked, half-mile oval that will still utilize the current seating. NASCAR President Steve Phelps has revealed that it will be a shorter track, maintaining the current seating and infrastructure.
NASCAR aims to complete the new track within 18 months from the start of construction. The upcoming facility will feature enhanced dining options and more comfortable seating for spectators.
Photographer Mark J. Rebilas has shared ground-level photos of the ongoing demolition, capturing the enormous scale of the track’s former footprint. The surrounding area will soon house an industrial park, consisting of at least seven planned buildings, around the new smaller track.
While many NASCAR fans express sadness over the demise of the old track, the sport’s governing body is moving forward with plans for the new facility. In the meantime, races will continue to be hosted at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
