Could Tim Anderson’s new home come with position change?

MLB free agency: Could Tim Anderson’s new home come with position change? originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Former Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson has entered free agency for the first time, sparking interest in whether he might transition to a new position as well as a new team.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, there is speculation that Anderson could be moved to second base by one of the teams pursuing him. The Los Angeles Angels are reportedly considering this change, as per Nightengale’s report.

Throughout his eight-season career with the White Sox, Anderson has been a consistent presence. However, his recent performance and defensive struggles have raised questions about his future position on the field.

Having played all eight seasons at shortstop, Anderson’s offensive production this season has been underwhelming, with just one home run and 25 RBI’s while hitting .245 with an on-base percentage of .286. Despite his challenging 2023, it’s worth noting that he finished seventh in MVP voting a few years ago and was an All-Star in the two seasons prior to his recent struggles.

Interestingly, Anderson also tried his hand at second base for the first time this season, although his performance was accompanied by an error in two games at the position.

Moreover, his defensive performance at shortstop this season was subpar, with a -19 defensive runs saved, leading to speculation about a potential change in position.

The White Sox declined Anderson’s contract option earlier this month, making him a free agent for the first time in his career.
