WooSox owner Larry Lucchino says ‘it’s time to sell this team’

He played a crucial role in the success of the Red Sox in the 2000s and was pivotal in reviving a winning culture for Boston’s baseball team as president and CEO. From 2015, he held the position of chairman and co-owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox, oversaw the team’s relocation to Worcester, and became the principal owner of the Triple-A club. Now, after decades as a baseball executive, Larry Lucchino is intending to sell the Worcester Red Sox.

Lucchino stated on the UnAnchored Boston podcast hosted by Bob Lobel and Mike Lynch that he’s prepared to hand over Worcester’s keys to someone else. At 78 years old, he expressed his desire to sell the team and embrace a blissful retirement.

Furthermore, he indicated his intention to sell the team to “a local buyer.” The WooSox has a 35-year lease with Polar Park, confirming the team’s stay in Worcester for the foreseeable future.

WooSox president Charles Steinberg confirmed the news to WBZ’s Dan Roche, revealing that the team has attracted buying interest since their move to Worcester two years ago. “Ever since the summer of 2021, there have been potential suitors for the WooSox, and that interest continues,” Steinberg shared.

In January 2022, The Boston Globe reported that Endeavor, a company based in California, made a $50 million offer to purchase the team, which Lucchino and Co. reportedly turned down. In March, Lucchino mentioned to Telegram & Gazette that he expected to remain the principal owner for a couple more years. “I’ve always been kind of a hard charger, and if I’m not a hard charger, what will I be? I don’t know,” he said a little over eight months ago.
