The 2023 WNBA season has released its viewership numbers, and the league’s performance continues to exceed expectations. The “Friday Night Spotlight on ION” contributed to a 24% increase in the total WNBA audience, from 31.5 million unique viewers to a staggering 39 million.
As part of a multiyear agreement, the league and The E.W. Scripps Company successfully completed the first year of televising weekly double-headers in primetime on Fridays during the 2023 regular season on ION.
“The WNBA and Scripps Sports partnership has demonstrated the power of ION as a television platform that significantly expands the league’s audience,” said Adam Symson, president and CEO of The E.W. Scripps Company. “We look forward to the next season to bring the athleticism and excitement of the WNBA to an even larger fan base, supported by our sponsors and advertisers.”
The 23 games broadcast on ION reached 12.3 million viewers, with 6.4 million being female viewers, marking a 29% increase in the WNBA’s female audience.
“When we joined forces with Scripps Sports for the 2023 season, we hoped their reach would elevate WNBA viewership, and Scripps has certainly delivered,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “New fans discovered us, and loyal fans embraced the appointment viewing. This success is set to continue growing in the future.”
