As high school golfers worldwide signed their national letters of intent, 15-year-old Oliver Betschart fielded questions from reporters in Southampton, Bermuda, ahead of his PGA Tour debut at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Betschart, a native of Bermuda, will become the youngest player to compete on Tour since 2014. Coincidentally, he will be paired with another qualifier, Andy Zhang, who played the U.S. Open at age 14 in 2012.
Despite being a couple of years away from college, Betschart qualified for the event by winning the Port Royal Golf Club Championship, securing one of three available spots in the 144-player field on a course he knows intimately. He has been involved with the event for several years, serving in various roles before making it as a player.
With his course knowledge and meticulous approach, Betschart expects to concede up to 70 yards off the tee to his pro competitors and is relying on his putter to make up the difference. A message on his bracelet serves as a reminder to focus on the present moment and the next shot.
As he prepares for his Tour debut, Betschart remains grounded, focused, and resolute in his determination to stay in the moment and not look too far ahead.
