STORRS, Conn. – UConn adds another chapter to its storied basketball program as they revealed their fifth national championship banner, followed by a revamped team poised to compete for a sixth title.

Alex Karaban shines as he scores a career-high 22 points in a dominant performance by the relentless Huskies, defeating Northern Arizona 95-52.

Tristen Newton contributes 14 points, joined by Donovan Clingan and Stephon Castle with 12 each, and Samson Johnson adding 11 points to secure an emphatic victory for UConn, capping off the celebration of their 2023 championship.

“Seeing that banner during shootaround is a moment that will be etched in our memories forever,” expressed coach Dan Hurley. “However, our focus since June has been on preparing this team to perform. The banner ceremony was remarkable. It truly moved me.”

The Huskies impressively convert 56% of their shots from the field (32-of-57), while holding the Lumberjacks to a mere 34% (20-of-59).

Liam Lloyd leads Northern Arizona with 15 points.

Last year, UConn dominated opponents in the NCAA tournament with an average winning margin of 20 points. Unfortunately, they bid farewell to their top three players, Adama Sanogo, Jordan Hawkins, and Andre Jackson Jr., who departed for the NBA. This dynamic trio contributed a combined 40.1 points and 17.7 rebounds per game.

This season, the team’s success revolves around the talented sophomore, Donovan Clingan, standing at an impressive 7-foot-2. However, Clingan suffered a right foot strain, causing him to miss the final month of preseason. He is gradually reintegrating into the lineup, playing limited minutes and securing 8 rebounds in this game.

“Being able to start my college career, returning from an injury and feeling strong out there, is an amazing feeling,” Clingan expressed.

The game opens with Clingan’s offensive rebound and layup, setting the pace for UConn’s commanding 14-5 run. The Huskies establish a 20-point lead when Karaban secures his own rebound and converts it into points, widening the gap to 39-19. UConn enters halftime with a comfortable 47-30 lead.
