Iga Swiatek kisses the WTA finals trophy

Swiatek is a three-time French Open champion and won the US Open in 2022

Iga Swiatek achieved a resounding victory over Jessica Pegula, securing the season-ending WTA Finals title and reclaiming the top spot in the women’s rankings.

To surpass Aryna Sabalenka and become the new world number one, the Polish player needed to defeat the American in the final held in Cancun. Swiatek accomplished this feat with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win, displaying exceptional dominance.

Throughout the 59-minute match, Swiatek showcased clinical precision while Pegula struggled to find her rhythm on the court.

This triumph marks Swiatek’s first WTA Finals tournament victory, solidifying her position as the youngest champion since Petra Kvitova’s win in 2011 at the age of 21.

“I want to express my gratitude to my dedicated team, who have supported me throughout the entire season,” Swiatek expressed with gratitude.

“Although we have faced various challenges, this triumph serves as an uplifting moment. With our continued hard work, we are bound to experience further successes,” she added.

The final match, originally scheduled for Sunday, had to be postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Nonetheless, it unfolded under clear skies in Cancun, Mexico.

Swiatek swiftly claimed the advantage by breaking Pegula’s serve in the fourth game, securing a 3-1 lead. She continued to dominate and ultimately clinched the first set in just 27 minutes.

Notably, this was the first set either player had dropped during the entire tournament. In the second set, Pegula, currently ranked fifth in the world, faced another setback as she lost her serve for the third time in the opening game.

Swiatek’s overwhelming performance continued, and she effortlessly broke Pegula’s serve to go up 3-0, ultimately securing her sixth WTA title of the season.
