Blue Jackets Coach Pascal Vincent Sets High Standards in Training Camp

WASHINGTON — Pascal Vincent set the standard for playing time on the first day of the Blue Jackets’ training camp.

Ice time is earned, not given, and that applies to every player. Since establishing that performance bar, the first-time NHL coach has consistently followed through with implementing his philosophy.

Kent Johnson, the fifth overall pick of the 2021 NHL draft, experienced being a healthy scratch for two games before being assigned to the AHL on Friday. Jack Roslovic also sat out a game as a healthy scratch and had to work his way up from the fourth line. Damon Severson, who signed an eight-year, $50 million contract in June, was benched for an entire third period. Kirill Marchenko, who scored 21 goals as a rookie last season, was held out of two games due to a scoring slump.

That’s all occurred within the first 10 games of the season, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Vincent once again took a strong action. In the third period of a 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday night, Vincent pulled struggling star Johnny Gaudreau from the game and sat him on the bench for the remainder, even during power plays.

The message was clear – playing time is earned and each player must contribute their best effort for the team to succeed. Gaudreau, despite his star status and large contract, was not exempt from this philosophy. Vincent made it known that he was not satisfied with Gaudreau’s performance, stating, “It doesn’t matter who you are. It’s about the Blue Jackets and I didn’t like his game.”

The Blue Jackets rely on Gaudreau’s talent and contributions to win games, and Vincent’s message to him was a reminder of his importance to the team. So far, Gaudreau has struggled to find the back of the net, with only one empty-net goal and four assists. Vincent’s decision to bench him reflected the need for improvement.
