Spruce Creek in state tournament position, Fletcher wins title

ELKTON — The Spruce Creek Hawks had a challenging day at the Region 1-3A boys tournament at St. Johns Golf Club, finishing fourth with a score of 309. The tournament was won by Nease, who posted an impressive score of 288.

In this tournament, the top two teams and individuals from non-advancing squads earn automatic entry into the state tournament for their classification. Additionally, eight more teams and individuals will make it to the state tournament based on a formula created by the FHSAA, which takes into account state rankings, district results, and regional results.

Despite not performing at their best, the Hawks are still in a good position to receive an at-large bid for the state tournament. The official status of their bid will be determined on Thursday after the remaining regionals conclude on Wednesday.

According to their coach, Mark Grose, the Hawks had a mix of good and bad performances from their players. He acknowledged that getting everyone to play well at the same time is a challenge in golf. Last week, at the districts, they had a strong finish and won the tournament. However, this week proved to be more difficult. Grose stated that in golf, you never know what you’re going to get.

The tournament on Tuesday started with a delay due to fog. Once play began, junior Gabriel Hull had an outstanding performance for Spruce Creek, shooting a 2-over-par 73 to tie for ninth place. He started off 5-over through nine holes but made a strong comeback on the back nine with three birdies and six pars. Junior Scotty Messick also had a solid performance, finishing just behind Hull with a score of 74, tying with three other players for 11th place.

Even though his team did not qualify for the state tournament, Tyler Brewer from New Smyrna Beach played as an individual and finished tied for 15th with a score of 75.
