The Texas Rangers showcased their resilience by securing a 3-1 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, taking a commanding 2-1 lead in the World Series. Despite facing the loss of starting pitcher Max Scherzer due to injury, the Rangers delivered a stellar performance.
The turning point of the game came in the third inning when Corey Seager launched a two-run homer, giving Texas a 3-0 advantage. Although Scherzer exited the game early with a back problem after being hit by a line drive, the Rangers held on to extend their remarkable streak of nine consecutive postseason road wins.
The fourth game of the series will be held on Tuesday evening at Chase Field.
After scoring nine runs in game two, the Diamondbacks struggled to find their rhythm on their home turf. In the bottom of the second inning, they had a chance to score when Christian Walker hit a double. However, a base hit from Tommy Pham led to an unfortunate decision by Walker, who ignored the third-base coach’s signal to stop at third and instead sprinted for home. Thanks to an exceptional throw from Adolis Garcia in right field, Walker was thrown out at home plate.
Texas took control in the third inning as Nathaniel Lowe’s double allowed Marcus Semien to bat him in. On the next pitch, shortstop Seager crushed a two-run shot over right field.
Scherzer’s back tightness forced him to leave the game after three innings, further challenging the Rangers. Additionally, star slugger Garcia exited in the eighth inning due to an apparent side strain after flying out to center field.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Diamondbacks finally managed to get on the scoreboard as Geraldo Perdomo drove in pinch-hitter Emmanuel Rivera. However, a disputed double play call extinguished their rally, and Rangers closer Jose Leclerc retired the side in the ninth.
The pitching match-up for game four is expected to be fascinating, with both teams likely to employ a “bullpen game” rather than traditional starters. The Rangers, who initially announced Jon Gray as their game four starter, had to utilize him for three relief innings following Scherzer’s injury. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks, who have struggled with a reliable fourth starter in the postseason, had already planned a bullpen game for Tuesday.
