CANCUN, Mexico – In a thrilling round-robin match at the WTA Finals, Iga Swiatek displayed extraordinary resilience and skill as she rallied to defeat Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets, with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-0.

Today, U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff is set to take on three-time major runner-up Ons Jabeur in another highly anticipated singles match.

Swiatek, who had clinched her third Grand Slam title by winning the French Open earlier this year, currently holds the world No. 2 ranking and has the potential to surpass Aryna Sabalenka at No. 1, depending on their performance in this season-ending championship.

Vondrousova, a left-handed player and the reigning Wimbledon champion, took an early lead by breaking Swiatek’s serve in three out of her first four service games. With a 5-2 advantage, Vondrousova appeared to be in control. However, Swiatek began to find her rhythm and fought back, winning 13 out of 17 points to take a 6-5 lead.

The match reached a pivotal moment during the tiebreaker, with the score tied at 3-all. Swiatek seized the opportunity and showcased her brilliance, hitting a powerful forehand winner, followed by a service winner and her first ace of the match. Vondrousova’s double fault ultimately sealed the first set for Swiatek after an intense 64 minutes.

The second set was a dominant display by Swiatek, with a staggering 27-9 edge in points. She closed out the match with a comprehensive 6-0 victory.
