News of the upcoming tournament in the following year has been announced – a total of 144 players will compete for a purse of $3.5 million. This makes it the largest purse on the tour, rivaling the majors and tour championship. Interestingly, this announcement comes in the same year that Boston welcomed franchises in the Professional Women’s Hockey League and the National Women’s Soccer League.
LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan expressed her excitement, stating that “Boston is quickly becoming a dynamic home for women’s sports.” She further added, “We are thrilled to join this incredible movement, as the famed TPC Boston prepares to host the 2024 FM Global Championship, marking a historic return of the LPGA Tour to New England. With this event, the new National Women’s Soccer League team, and the new Professional Women’s Hockey League team, the momentum for women’s sports in the Boston area is undeniable.”
FM Global, an international commercial property insurer based in Johnston, R.I., has partnered with the LPGA for a period of five years. This sponsorship signifies the company’s entry into the major sports realm and is the first visible result of the alliance between the LPGA Tour and Fenway Sports Management, an arm of the Fenway Sports Group conglomerate.
The last professional women’s golf event in New England took place in 2004 with the US Women’s Open at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley. Prior to that, the LPGA held its Welch’s Championship at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton in 1997. Additionally, Massachusetts has hosted several other women’s golf championships over the years.
In exciting news, the USGA recently announced that The Country Club in Brookline will host the US Women’s Open in 2045 and the US Girls’ Junior in 2030.
TPC Boston, located approximately 25 miles south of Boston, will be hosting its first-ever professional women’s competition. The course has previously hosted 17 PGA Tour events.
The official announcement of the FM Global Championship was held at Fenway Park, with notable attendees such as Governor Maura Healy of Massachusetts, Governor Daniel McKee of Rhode Island, City of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan, and Massachusetts native and LPGA tour member Brittany Altomare.
