Fresh off signing a new $41 million deal, Josh Green showcased his skills and proved why the Mavericks were eager to extend his contract. Meanwhile, Josh Giddey had a productive season opener and still has room to improve. Let’s take a look at how each Australian player performed and what their roles could look like in the 2023-24 season.
BEN SIMMONS (Brooklyn Nets)
Despite the Brooklyn Nets’ heartbreaking loss to the Cavaliers, Simmons had a solid showing in his first game with the team. He displayed his high-level playmaking skills by delivering pinpoint passes to his teammates. Simmons also helped push the pace in transition and contributed 10 rebounds and a game-high nine assists. However, he lacked the physicality and assertiveness on offense that he showed in the preseason, only managing four points. Simmons acknowledged that he has more to give to the team.
JOSH GIDDEY (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Giddey, the rising star of the Oklahoma City Thunder, demonstrated his elite vision by finding teammates for open 3-pointers. His confidence in shooting from beyond the arc is an area for improvement, but he did knock down several 3-pointers during the game. Additionally, Giddey has been working on finishing inside the paint, utilizing his 6-foot-8 frame to his advantage. He scored 10 of his 16 points from inside the paint and will continue to focus on drawing fouls.
DYSON DANIELS (New Orleans Pelicans)
Daniels made an immediate impact with a spin move and a silky finish for a bucket. While he is a work in progress on the offensive end, Daniels showcased his defensive skills by recording two steals and a block. He contributed six points and five rebounds off the bench and earned praise from Pelicans coach Willie Green.
JOSH GREEN (Dallas Mavericks)
Although Mavericks coach Jason Kidd made some surprising calls with the starting lineup, Green made a significant impact on both ends of the court. He displayed his playmaking abilities, set up his teammates for easy baskets, and showed exceptional effort and high energy throughout the game. Green contributed 11 points, one steal, two rebounds, and an assist in the victory over the Spurs.
DANTE EXUM (Dallas Mavericks)
While Exum had a limited role off the bench for the Mavericks, his athleticism, length, and versatility remain valuable to the team. Despite his limited playing time, Exum will continue to be an asset for Dallas.
JOCK LANDALE (Houston Rockets)
As the backup big man for the Houston Rockets, Landale played a limited role in the team’s loss to Orlando. He recorded two assists and made one of two 3-point attempts in just nine minutes of play. Unfortunately, Landale suffered a concussion in the game, which will prevent him from suiting up for the next fixture against San Antonio.
Overall, the Australian players have shown promise and potential in their respective teams, and their roles may evolve as the season progresses.
