Ottawa Senators center Shane Pinto has been handed a 41-game ban by the National Hockey League (NHL) for his involvement in sports wagering.

A thorough NHL investigation found no evidence indicating that the 22-year-old American, who scored 20 goals for the Senators last season, placed any bets on NHL games. The league, however, did not disclose the specifics of Pinto’s violation of its sports wagering policy.

Pinto expressed remorse in a statement, saying, “I apologize to the National Hockey League, the Ottawa Senators, my teammates, the fans, the city of Ottawa, and most importantly my family. I fully accept responsibility for my actions and eagerly look forward to rejoining my team on the ice.”

The ban, which is retroactive to the beginning of this season, will keep Pinto sidelined until January.

In response to the NHL’s investigation, the Senators released a statement, stating, “We were made aware of the NHL inquiry and subsequently received additional details regarding the investigation’s findings. Although Shane is an integral part of our team—a bright and talented young individual—he made regrettable choices that led to his suspension by the NHL. We believe he is sincerely remorseful for his mistakes.

“Once the time is right and with the NHL’s approval, we will welcome him back into the organization and embrace him as one of our own.”

The club reiterated its full support for the NHL’s gambling regulations, stating, “While we are disappointed by this situation, our organization remains committed to supporting Shane and providing the necessary assistance for him to address his issues and become a valuable contributor to our community.”
