Seguin forgets ID, not recognized by security before game against Golden Knights

On Tuesday night, Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin found himself in a bit of a bind as he tried to enter T-Mobile Arena for his team’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights. In a surprising turn of events, Seguin had forgotten to bring his identification, which served as proof of his status as an NHL player and granted him access through the player’s entrance.

This incident marked the first time in his 14-season career that the seasoned forward had encountered such a predicament.

“I can’t say that I’ve always carried around my player badge. It’s not like I expected people to recognize me solely based on that. However, I suppose there’s an assumption made when folks see a guy my age, dressed in a suit,” Seguin confessed. “Most of the time, we arrive at the arena on a team bus, so I’ve never really faced this situation before. But in Vegas, the hotel is within walking distance, so I decided to walk over. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but the security personnel took his job very seriously, and I respect that. He wasn’t going to compromise on his duty.”

Left with only a picture of his driver’s license on his phone, Seguin resorted to presenting a different image in an attempt to authenticate his identity: his official team headshot from media day.

“I scrolled through my camera roll and located the headshot, showing it to him while wearing the smile I thought the picture portrayed. However, he glanced at me and responded, ‘You could be anybody,'” Seguin recalled. “I understood where he was coming from and acknowledged his vigilance.”

Fortunately for Seguin, his coach, Pete DeBoer, happened to be a few minutes behind him. The security guard immediately recognized DeBoer as he had previously coached in Vegas from 2020 to 2022.

“The security guy looked straight at Pete and cheerfully exclaimed, ‘Hey Pete!'” Seguin recounted. “I simply nodded and thought, ‘Alright, that’s good enough for me.’ Pete turned to me with a puzzled look on his face and asked, ‘What’s going on?’ I replied, ‘They won’t let me in, coach!’ He burst out laughing and said, ‘That’s Tyler Seguin, and he’s on my team!’

“We shared a good laugh about the whole situation,” Seguin added.
