ABU DHABI – Alexander Volkanovski plans to take a different approach in his rematch against Islam Makhachev.
Volkanovski (26-2 MMA, 13-1 UFC) has stepped up on short notice to challenge lightweight champion Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) in the main event of UFC 294, taking place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The main card will be broadcast on pay-per-view at a special time of 2 p.m. ET, following prelims on ESPN+.
In their first encounter, Volkanovski was defeated by Makhachev in a closely fought unanimous decision loss at UFC 284. This time, Volkanovski intends to ramp up his aggression and go for the finish.
“Although I respected him a lot, maybe I backed myself too late in the previous fight,” Volkanovski told MMA Junkie. “But now, the timing is perfect. I can’t afford to show him that respect. I need to go out there and aim for the finish.”
Volkanovski wants to make a statement and leave a lasting impression with a decisive victory.
“I want to finish him. I have the stamina to go the distance, but that’s not even a concern. Let’s go out there and establish dominance, which will have a huge impact on my legacy and get people talking.”
Makhachev’s over seven minutes of control time played a crucial role in persuading the judges. Volkanovski expects Makhachev to again attempt takedowns but cautions him not to rely on wearing him down.
“I guarantee you he’s going to try and grapple again because I plan on landing heavy strikes, knees, and kicks. He may think his best chance is to slow me down and take me to the later rounds. However, I won’t slow down due to lack of preparation.”
Volkanovski’s ideal outcome is a quick finish.
“I want a knockout. I want an early stoppage,” Volkanovski said.
