Bulls’ Patrick Williams search for consistent aggressiveness continues

In the quest for consistent aggressiveness, Patrick Williams of the Chicago Bulls finds himself being replaced by Torrey Craig in the first quarter. This strategy allows Williams to stagger his minutes and face the opposing team’s second unit.

However, in the recent preseason game against the Toronto Raptors, coach Billy Donovan made an unusual move by pulling Williams out just 2 minutes and 45 seconds after tipoff. Donovan revealed that this decision was based on his dissatisfaction with the way Williams started the game.

“I noticed several opportunities for him to attack the backboard and grab offensive rebounds,” Donovan explained. “We discussed it, and I wasn’t pleased with our performance at the beginning. It’s not about whether he made or missed shots or showed aggression. I believe there are areas where he can utilize his athleticism.”

Donovan had a conversation with Williams after the quick substitution. While Williams downplayed the exchange, Donovan emphasized that the team’s lack of energy early on cannot solely be attributed to Williams.

Despite the early setback, Donovan praised Williams for his improved performance as the game progressed, particularly in the fourth quarter. Williams displayed more aggressiveness and made strong moves towards the rim, even though he missed a crucial layup when the Bulls were down by one with 11.5 seconds remaining.

“As the game went on, especially in the fourth quarter, I saw a significant increase in his aggressiveness, both in attacking the backboard and finishing at the rim,” Donovan acknowledged. “He took his shots when they presented themselves, which is encouraging.

“These experiences should serve as valuable lessons for him. He has already demonstrated his capabilities, and we need to consistently bring that out of him. . . . He needs to be more assertive in certain areas.”

Torrey Craig, a veteran wing player, has been instrumental in pushing Williams to reach his potential. Craig mentioned that the Bulls are a relatively quiet team, which is expected considering the presence of young players in the rotation. With 27 minutes of playing time compared to Williams’ 21, Craig also provides motivation by potentially taking away minutes from Williams.

“I constantly communicate with him, offering positive reinforcement but also giving tough love when necessary,” Craig stated. “I believe he responded well when he got back in the game. During the fourth quarter, he showed aggressiveness and attacked the rim.”

Craig’s highlight of the game was a remarkable defensive play where he chased down Gary Trent Jr. and blocked his dunk attempt during a fast break.

“One of the great things about Craig is his constant communication. It’s not necessarily instructive or directive, but he remains positive on the bench and consistently communicates on defense,” Donovan praised. “Moreover, he possesses a high motor and plays with physicality.”

In the end, Williams concluded the game with 10 points and three rebounds. In the previous game against the Denver Nuggets, he scored 20 points while key players like Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic were resting.

Throughout this preseason, Williams has emphasized the importance of becoming more consistent. He acknowledged that there is still a work in progress but feels confident about his performance and the team’s overall progress.
