Conor McGregor, the renowned UFC superstar, has been cleared of criminal charges regarding an alleged sexual assault at an NBA Finals game in June, as reported by TMZ.
According to TMZ’s report on Tuesday, prosecutors have determined that there is “insufficient evidence” and a lack of corroborating witnesses to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that McGregor sexually assaulted a woman on June 9 at Game 4 of the NBA Finals in Miami’s Kaseya Center. McGregor’s attorney, Barbara Llanes, expressed satisfaction with the decision, asserting that there was no basis for pursuing the case.
The incident in question took place after the basketball game, when McGregor, who was at the event for a promotional appearance, allegedly “violently raped” a woman inside a men’s restroom. CCTV footage from the arena showed both McGregor and the accuser entering the restroom together for about five minutes. Subsequently, they were seen together at a club inside the arena.
Prosecutors, in their memo, disclosed that they had interviewed a bathroom attendant who witnessed the pair entering a stall together. However, the attendant stated that he did not hear any signs of distress or non-consensual activity. Additionally, the accuser’s friend confirmed to prosecutors that she was not informed about the alleged attack.
Furthermore, the memo detailed the accuser’s inquiry with the detectives regarding McGregor’s potential response if she chose to press charges. She queried whether he would settle or offer compensation in lieu of legal proceedings.
In the days following the initial reports of the alleged assault, the accuser’s attorney claimed that the NBA had offered her $100,000 to maintain silence about the incident. The league promptly refuted the allegation, categorically stating its falsity.
Despite the accusations faced by McGregor, ESPN and the UFC pressed ahead with airing Season 31 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” which featured McGregor as a coach opposite Michael Chandler. Speculations about a potential fight between the two have since emerged, although a date has yet to be announced. McGregor recently returned to the USADA testing pool and must provide two negative tests while remaining available in the pool for six months.
“The Notorious” had withdrawn himself from testing while recovering from a broken ankle sustained during his last fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in June 2021.
