Emmitt Smith would have gone to Auburn if not Florida

NFL legend Emmitt Smith had an exceptional career at the University of Florida, solidifying his status as one of the greatest running backs of all time.

During his time with the Gators, Smith had three impressive seasons and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame for his contributions to the team.

Recently, Smith revealed that there was another SEC school that caught his attention during the recruiting process. In an interview with SEC This Morning on Monday, he disclosed his other potential choice.

“It definitely wouldn’t have been Florida State, I can assure you that,” Smith said jokingly. “No, it probably would’ve been the University of Auburn.”

The Tigers successfully recruited Smith and definitely made an impression on him. He considered following in the footsteps of Bo Jackson and playing under the coaching of Pat Dye. However, Smith ultimately made the decision to play for the Gators instead.

Smith recalled, “When I was entering college, Bo Jackson had recently won the Heisman Trophy. Auburn and Pat Dye promised me, ‘Here’s the plan. Here’s how we’re going to help you win the Heisman. Because we want you to have the Heisman.’”

There were other factors that also contributed to Smith’s consideration of Auburn.

“Auburn was known for their strong running game, and they played on grass, which was another motivating factor for me. But Auburn would have been the school,” he admitted.

Ultimately, signing with Florida proved to be the right choice for Emmitt Smith. He was named the SEC Player of the Year after his junior season and received unanimous first-team All-American honors that same year.

In the 1990 NFL Draft, Smith was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round. He went on to achieve immense success, winning three Super Bowls, a Super Bowl MVP, and the NFL MVP. Smith currently holds the all-time records for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in the NFL.

“Emmitt was phenomenal. As someone of my generation, having Emmitt Smith approach you is incredibly impactful,” said Napier. “But Emmitt made a significant contribution to this program. He had an extraordinary career after leaving the University of Florida, but his impact as a player here is immeasurable. I hope to see him more frequently. This is a place where he is always welcome. He did a tremendous amount for this program, and we are dedicated to creating an environment where former players like him can return whenever they desire.”
