University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Ben Johnson has announced two promotions within his staff. Josh Adel has been promoted from video coordinator to assistant coach, while Collin Southworth has been promoted from recruiting coordinator to head video coordinator. Adel now joins Marcus Jenkins, Jason Kemp, and Dave Thorson as coaches. The NCAA approved the addition of a fourth assistant per team this past summer.
“We’re thrilled to elevate Josh as an assistant coach and Collin as our head video coordinator,” said Johnson. “Josh has been with Gopher Basketball since 2013-14 and has been an essential part of our program. We’re excited to bring his skills onto the court in this expanded role. Collin has been invaluable as our recruiting coordinator and we’re excited to promote him as head video coordinator to further enhance our program.”
Adel is entering his 10th season with Golden Gopher men’s basketball and his third year with Coach Johnson’s staff. He started as the operations director in 2013-14 and moved on to become the video coordinator in 2014-15, where he prepared film and assisted with scouting reports. The 2023-24 season will mark his first as an assistant coach. During Adel’s time with Minnesota, the team made two NCAA appearances in 2017 and 2019 and won the NIT championship in 2013.
Prior to joining Minnesota, Adel spent one season at Florida International and five years with the Florida Gators, where he moved up to become head manager. He was responsible for organizing the annual Gator Coaches Clinic and assisting with scouting reports. Adel was part of the team during the Gators’ successful NCAA Tournament runs in 2011 and 2012, reaching the Elite Eight both times, as well as making deep runs in the NIT Quarterfinals and Semifinals.
Adel received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Florida in 2012.
Southworth joined the Golden Gopher program in 2021 after spending two years at Olivet Nazarene University. At ONU, he assisted with daily floor instruction, skill development, film preparation, scouting reports, and recruiting. He also served as the head coach of the junior varsity program in 2020-21.
Prior to Olivet Nazarene, Southworth was a student assistant at Xavier from 2017-19. He was also a Xavier student manager and served as an event operator with Hoop Group Academic Elite Camp.
Southworth graduated from Xavier in 2019 with a degree in sports management and obtained a master’s degree in organization leadership from Olivet Nazarene University in May 2021.
