NCAA: Spikemark out, Clippd in for scoring, rankings

The NCAA has decided to part ways with Spikemark after a turbulent few months.

On Monday evening, the NCAA announced that Clippd, a golf data platform with connections to college golf, will be taking over as the official golf scoring and ranking provider for the NCAA. This comes after Spikemark failed to meet its deadline to publish its first rankings, which were created by strokes-gained founder Mark Broadie.

According to Golf Channel, Spikemark CEO Derek Freeman brought in Clippd to help resolve the numerous issues with Spikemark’s website, app, and live-scoring platform. Clippd was approached by Freeman with an urgent request and has since assisted in relaunching Spikemark’s website and app, using their own data platform.

Clippd has a strong presence in college golf, with partnerships with College Golf Experience and over 100 college programs, including Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. Coaches have praised Clippd’s performance-insights offering as the best program they’ve ever used.

Clippd has worked with Spikemark to compile and validate fall 2023 results from all Division I, II, and III men’s and women’s golf competitions. Mark Broadie will continue to be the ranking authority and will collaborate with Clippd to release initial rankings after the fall season.

The NCAA is confident that Clippd will overcome any technological challenges and provide the quality services that student-athletes and the college golf community deserve. It is unclear whether Clippd will repurpose Spikemark’s website or create a new one to display the results.

Freeman, who previously served as UCLA’s coach, admitted that Spikemark was rushed and expressed his dedication to making things right. However, now Freeman and Spikemark are being replaced by Clippd.
