Richardson, the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft, suffered an AC joint sprain in his right (throwing) shoulder during the second quarter of Indianapolis’ Week 5 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Since the injury, the Colts have sought multiple medical opinions to determine the best course of action. Irsay stated that the evaluations are leaning towards Richardson being out for the season.
“The most likely scenario is that he will miss the remainder of the year,” Irsay explained. “While it’s not definite, it’s probable that he’ll be out, and we have to deal with that reality.”
One of the decisions the team faces is whether Richardson’s injury requires surgery or if continued rehab will suffice. Irsay indicated that surgery is the more probable option.
“There’s ongoing debate, but it’s likely that surgery will be scheduled within the next week,” Irsay shared. “We are still trying to determine the specifics and Anthony’s own preferences.”
According to Irsay, Richardson’s desires will play a significant role in the final decision. While the team will consider his input, players generally follow the advice of medical professionals. The Colts are taking a cautious approach to address Richardson’s injury due to its impact on the franchise’s long-term future.
The Colts suffered their first loss since Richardson was placed on injured reserve last week, falling 37-20 to the Jacksonville Jaguars with backup Gardner Minshew. They are now 3-3 and will host the Cleveland Browns in Week 7.
Multiple sources within the team have stated that doctors are still actively consulting regarding the next steps, and final decisions have not been made. Richardson’s injury has been evaluated by top specialists across the country.
“We believe we still have a great football team,” Irsay expressed. “We will take it one game at a time.”
