It may still be early in the NHL season, but we’ve already witnessed a jaw-dropping contender for Hit of the Year. Detroit’s Lucas Raymond delivered a stunning blow to Tampa Bay’s Mikey Eyssimont that is sure to be talked about for quite some time.
The game between the Lightning and the Red Wings took place at Little Caesars Arena, where these two teams have a history of intense matchups. While the Red Wings have undergone a rebuilding phase, the Lightning have emerged as a dominant force, winning a couple of Stanley Cups.
However, both teams still possess a physical edge.
Moments after the Red Wings pulled ahead with a goal early in the first period, Lucas Raymond decided to make Eyssimont’s seat the wrong bench.

This hit is undeniably hilarious, and it’s been a while since we’ve seen someone get checked so cleanly into the bench. It was a perfect combination of positioning and leverage that sent Eyssimont tumbling onto the Red Wings’ bench.
Every hockey fan knows that ending up sprawled on the bench floor is far from desirable. It’s downright disgusting, with spit and sweat pooling around you. But what’s worse is ending up on the floor of the opposing team’s bench. They’re not likely to lend a helping hand while you’re trying to escape.
Fortunately, Eyssimont managed to avoid any injuries from the incident. These types of hits can often be worrisome and potentially dangerous.
The Red Wings seem to have embraced a more physical style of play this season. This could make them an unexpected team to watch out for in the highly competitive Atlantic Division.
