Carolina Hurricanes Hang on for 6-5 Victory Over Los Angeles Kings
LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a thrilling game that saw the Carolina Hurricanes blow a three-goal lead, Jordan Martinook scored in the ninth round of the shootout to secure a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. Despite the victory, the Hurricanes’ performance left their coach, Rod Brind’Amour, feeling dissatisfied with their overall play and numerous penalties.
The game was filled with excitement from the start. Sebastian Aho set a franchise record with his 17th short-handed goal before adding another goal in the shootout. Teuvo Teravainen and Brendan Lemieux also contributed with short-handed goals, while Brent Burns and Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored early for the Hurricanes. Although the Kings managed to tie the game late in regulation, it was Martinook who ultimately sealed the win for Carolina in the shootout.
Carolina goaltender Frederik Andersen made 25 saves and showcased his skills for the second consecutive start. Despite the team’s less-than-ideal performance, Andersen remained confident in his team, praising Martinook for his poise on the puck. Additionally, Aho surpassed Eric Staal’s team record for career short-handed goals, further solidifying his status as a key player for the Hurricanes.
The Kings, on the other hand, struggled defensively, allowing a total of 10 goals in their first two games of the season. While Anze Kopitar scored two goals for the team, it wasn’t enough to secure the win. Coach Todd McLellan expressed his frustration with individual performances and stressed the need for defensive improvement.
Veteran forward Viktor Arvidsson’s absence due to a back injury was also a blow for the Kings. General Manager Rob Blake confirmed that Arvidsson would require surgery and be out for an extended period.
Looking ahead, the Hurricanes will face the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, while the Kings will take on the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.
