Florida State football to honor 1993 national champions vs. Syracuse

Watch: Florida State’s Keon Coleman Discusses the FSU Offense and Connection with Travis

Ehsan Kassim, a journalist from the Tallahassee Democrat, recently had the opportunity to interview Florida State wide receiver Keon Coleman. In the interview, Coleman talks about the FSU offense and his connection with quarterback Jordan Travis.

According to Coleman, he couldn’t pick just one favorite memory from 30 years ago when discussing the 1993 national championship team. He recalls the camaraderie and support that made that team special, stating, “When one person did great, we all celebrated.”

As part of the 30th anniversary celebration of FSU’s first football title, Florida State will be honoring the 1993 national championship team during halftime of their game against Syracuse this weekend. At least 56 players and nine assistant coaches from that team will be recognized, including retired jerseys like Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn, and Charlie Ward.

In addition to the on-field ceremony, the team will be led by Osceola and Renegade, the symbols of Florida State’s football program, from the south end zone. This event is expected to be a memorable reunion for the players and coaches who were part of that historic team.

Clifton Abraham, a former player on the 1993 team, is excited to return to Tallahassee for the celebration. Abraham, who currently works for the post office in Dallas, previously attended the 20-year anniversary in 2013. He reflects on the tight-knit bond of the team and their determination to succeed, stating, “We were a super close team and so determined. It was a great, fun group of guys that share a special bond.”

A busy weekend is planned for the returning players, coaches, and staff. FSU coach Mike Norvell invites former players to attend the team’s Friday walk-through each week, and a reception specifically for the 1993 team is scheduled. The team will also join the current Seminoles for their Legacy Team Walk before the game and be recognized at the Sod Cemetery. They will have the opportunity to watch the FSU-Syracuse game from the Dunlap Champions Club.

Abraham is grateful for the opportunity to go back and reunite with his former teammates. He acknowledges the significance of the 1993 national title and the continued love and support from fans, stating, “Nobody forgets that first one. A lot of people still love our era, and that’s really nice.”

Overall, the 30th anniversary celebration promises to be a special event for the 1993 national championship team and the Florida State football program. Fans can tune in to watch the game on Saturday at noon on ABC or follow live updates on Tallahassee.com and the Twitter accounts of Ehsan Kassim, Jack Williams, and Jim Henry.
