Curry jokes how he ‘suffered’ through mispronunciation of name originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
There’s more than one way to pronounce the name “Stephen,” though fans of Warriors star Steph Curry typically don’t use his full name.
But Wardell Stephen Curry III has dealt with confusion about his name his entire life, as he told reporters on Friday, with many mistakenly pronouncing it as “Steven” instead of “Stefan.”
“You’ve got to ask Jack and Juanita Curry from Grottoes, Virginia, where my pops was born,” Curry said, referring to the pronunciation of his name, before the Warriors’ preseason victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena. “Because he was Wardell Stephen Curry the first, I guess you would say.
“The Wardell name is a family name that has been passed down, but yeah. I don’t know where they got the pronunciation [for Stephen from]. I suffered throughout my entire childhood because everybody called me Steven when they read it on paper. Even to this day, I still get it occasionally.”
Curry even joked about considering putting a pronunciation symbol on his name in high school. However, his NBA career has reached such heights that he is now known simply as Steph. And really, that’s the only name he has ever known.
“From the beginning,” Curry said.
