Podziemski impresses in win vs. Lakers

Warriors observations: Podziemski impresses in win vs. Lakers originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The NBA preseason is less about winning than building cohesion and developing chemistry, both of which will involve considerable experimentation.

The Warriors will find many lessons upon reviewing video of their 129-125 victory Friday night over the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.

Coach Steve Kerr, after drawing a hard line between starters and reserves in the preseason opener last week, took a few liberties with his rotation, occasionally putting second-unit member to share the court with starters. The results were mixed.

Stephen Curry was sharp, pouring in 18 points in 21 minutes while adding four assists and three rebounds. None of the starters played more than 22 minutes, with Klay Thompson contributing eight points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Here are three observations from the second of Golden State’s five preseason games:

Paul struggles in his specialty

Chris Paul’s 18-year career epitomizes the role of the traditional point guard, focusing on controlling tempo and ensuring the stability of the unit.

In this game, though, Paul’s performance fell short. Known for his ball security, he committed five turnovers in 20 minutes, some of which were related to miscommunication and others simply below his standard.

Sometimes errors are natural during the learning process of playing with new teammates. Kevin Durant and Curry took about 25 regular-season games to begin meshing. There’s no need to panic regarding Paul, who has been with five previous teams.

Defense looks familiar, and not in a good way

The Warriors’ defense last season, especially on the road, left much to be desired. Unfortunately, their first preseason game showed similar struggles.

The Lakers scored 70 points in the first half, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and an impressive 55.6 percent from beyond the arc. Golden State’s defense appeared soft and sloppy at times, resulting in too many fouls. The Warriors were whistled 27 times compared to the Lakers’ 19, leading to a significant disadvantage in free-throw attempts.

While missing Draymond Green due to injury is a factor, tightening the defense remains a key priority for the Warriors.

“Podz” submits impressive performance

Rookie Brandin Podziemski has been impressing coaches and veterans with his approach to the game and basketball IQ. These qualities were on display in his performance against the Lakers.

Playing mostly with the second unit, Podziemski showcased his ability to find gaps and make accurate decisions, recording 10 points, 10 assists, six rebounds, and zero turnovers in 26 minutes. Through two preseason games, he has been a standout player, contributing 21 points, 14 assists, 12 rebounds, and just two turnovers in 52 minutes.

While Podziemski may not see significant playing time in the NBA this season, the Santa Clara University product is proving why the Warriors believe he has a bright future.
