Providence basketball ramps up for season with 3 events

Providence basketball coach Kim English is having a jam-packed week filled with exciting events and preparations for the upcoming season. This includes his debut on his radio show, a pro day attended by all 30 NBA teams, and the annual Mal Brown Scrimmage. The scrimmage will take place at Amica Mutual Pavilion, with the Friars divided into two teams and playing multiple periods of up to seven minutes each. The action begins at 4 p.m.

Providence College head men's basketball coach is having a busy week that includes a radio show debut, a pro day and a day of scrimmages.

“It’s practice for us,” English said. “We’ll start with some skills and drills, and then we’ll get into the scrimmage.”

Just a few weeks ago, the Friars wrapped up their August tour of Spain, where they secured three victories against local teams. This trip helped them solidify their rotation for the upcoming season. One notable change to the roster was the addition of freshman forward Eli DeLaurier, who enrolled after another player transferred.

“Eli has been a blessing,” English said. “He’s shown exceptional talent and maturity for a freshman.”

Tuesday’s practice downtown and English’s appearance on the radio show featured familiar faces like Corey Floyd Jr., Jayden Pierre, and Bryce Hopkins, along with George Mason transfers Ticket Gaines and Josh Oduro. The chemistry and camaraderie among the players have been crucial in their transition.

“These guys have formed a strong bond already,” English said. “Their connection and unity will help us excel.”

PC junior forward-guard Bryce Hopkins has been among players who have appeared in mock NBA drafts ahead of the 2024 event.

The Friars are focused on improving their skills and teamwork during every practice. The players engage in intense competition, making decisions and playing together.

As they gear up for the upcoming season, the Friars are dealing with a couple of injuries. Justyn Fernandez is still recovering from a knee injury, while Rich Barron should be available after a minor shoulder issue. The team is looking forward to an exhibition game that will also involve the women’s team, with ticket sales benefiting the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
