BELLEAIR — Even before concluding her illustrious career in professional golf, Annika Sorenstam pondered her journey, reflecting on how she achieved greatness and envisioning the future of women’s golf.
Next month, the legendary golfer will return to Tampa Bay to host The Annika from Nov. 6-12 at Pelican Golf Club in Bellair. This LPGA event holds the distinction of being the first to bear the name of a former player.
Formerly known as the Pelican Women’s Championship, the tournament now boasts a prize of $3.25 million and will showcase eight of the top 10 players in the Women’s World Golf rankings, including No.1 ranked Lilia Vu, two-time defending champion Nelly Korda, and major winners Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko, Danielle Kang, and Lexi Thompson.
In addition to providing top-tier golf action, the tournament will also benefit the Annika Foundation, which offers golf opportunities for juniors, collegiate players, and professionals while promoting the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle.
Sorenstam recently revealed the details of the tournament’s plans alongside LPGA Tour member and Tampa resident Elizabeth Szokol, as well as Louise Rydqvist, a South Carolina junior and a graduate of Sorenstam’s foundation who earned a sponsor’s exemption to The Annika.
In an interview, Sorenstam discussed her journey and shared her thoughts on the current state of women’s golf:
Why is it significant for an LPGA event to be named after a former player?
“I hope this is just the beginning. History and tradition are crucial. We have the Hall of Fame to celebrate achievements, and many of the legendary players of the past were truly inspirational to me.
“Their stories inspire everyone, while simultaneously reminding us where we come from. By honoring history, we can also look towards the future. The PGA Tour does an exceptional job of striking this balance, and I hope the LPGA can do the same.”
What is your reaction to Louise Rydqvist, who will make her LPGA debut at your tournament, following in the footsteps of your foundation?
“It warms my heart. We have poured a tremendous amount of effort, resources, and time into the foundation, aiming to inspire and assist. When she mentioned that she participated in our foundation tournament at the age of 15, it gave me goosebumps.
“Louise is on a path that we have helped pave, so seeing it come to fruition is incredibly rewarding. We hope to see more individuals like Louise in the future. Golf, and sports in general, present young women with numerous opportunities both professionally and personally, cultivating their confidence and opening doors for them. It’s truly wonderful.”
Speaking of young women following your footsteps, twenty years ago, you competed against men in the Colonial on the PGA Tour. This weekend, Lexi Thompson will participate in the PGA’s Shriners Children’s Open. What was that experience like for you?
“That experience surpassed mere golf; it’s difficult to pinpoint a specific moment or incident that stood out the most. However, as Lexi competes there now, certain memories come flooding back because we’re discussing it. Looking back on my career, I consider that one of the highlights, and it wasn’t solely based on my score.
“I came across something on social media, and apparently, I shot a 71 and 74. Frankly, I had forgotten about those numbers because it wasn’t about the score itself. It was about the memories, the journey, the experiences, and the people I encountered. It was about putting myself to the test… So, to me, the opportunity to challenge myself against the very best was what made it so special, and it made me a better player.”
Why did you choose to commence your tournament now, and why did you select Tampa Bay?
“I’ve been away for the right amount of time, but not for too long. I’ve maintained my involvement with the LPGA and continue to support young players. With this tournament, Gainbridge (the financial-services company sponsoring the event) has done a tremendous amount for women’s sports—especially their work in tennis. So, I believe we are aligned in our efforts to provide opportunities for women.
“Additionally, Pelican Golf Club is an amazing venue. They possess the drive and vision needed in a partner.”
