Former Mets Star Embraces Normalcy, Excluded from Postseason Roster

Former Mets starter Max Scherzer will not be playing for the Rangers against the Orioles on Tuesday, as he remains sidelined. However, if the Rangers advance, it is likely that Scherzer will pitch in the ALCS.

During an interview with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Tuesday, Scherzer provided an update on his status.

According to “Rangers Today Baseball Podcast” host John Moore, Scherzer told Rosenthal that he feels normal. He also relayed the same information to Bochy.

Scherzer injured his teres major muscle, which forced him to the injured list last month and ended his regular season. He missed 35 days due to the same injury while he was with the Mets. The ALCS is scheduled to begin on Oct. 15, which means it will be 33 days since Scherzer’s last start.

The Mets traded Scherzer to the Rangers in exchange for Luisangel Acuña before the August 1 trade deadline. Despite the injury, Scherzer performed well for the Rangers, finishing the season with a 13-6 record and a 3.70 ERA. This is an improvement from his 4.01 ERA in 19 starts with the Mets.

Scherzer has one year left on his contract, and as part of the trade agreement, the Mets agreed to pay $20.8 million of his base salary for the 2024 season, which totals $43.3 million.

Acuña, who is ranked as the Mets’ top prospect according to MLB Pipeline, had an impressive season in the minor leagues. He recorded a .294 batting average, .359 on-base percentage, .410 slugging percentage, and stole 57 bases in 67 attempts in 121 games between Double-A Frisco and Double-A Birmingham.
